I am bound by the UKCP ethical guidelines, and this includes the responsibility to manage your information confidentially and in line with GDPR. I also adhere to the BACP ethical framework on principle.
I am a practitioner who takes ethics seriously. I will treat your personal information and what you share with me with the utmost respect. From time to time I will discuss my work with a clinical supervisor; this is standard practice and helps me to work as well as I can with you. My supervisor is bound by the same code of ethics and confidentiality as myself, and holds ethical principles (and indeed me) to the same high standard. The primary purpose of supervision is to ensure client safety.
The vast majority of Psychotherapists and Counsellors are highly trained and beholden to the UKCP and/or BACP principles. I would strongly encourage any potential client to ensure any Counsellor or Psychotherapist you decide to engage with can reassure you as to their sound ethical practice. They should be able to answer any questions you have non-defensively and calmly, putting you completely at ease. This is not a regulated industry. If you’re with someone and it doesn’t feel right to you, it isn't right.
